Episode 17 - Tales of the Migrant Academic in the Global North

It's been a while. But we're back, and what an episode to return on.

In this episode we talk to Dr. Olga Burlyuk and Dr. Ladan Rahbari about their new book  Migrant Academics’ Narratives of Precarity and Resilience in Europe. We discuss the experiences of those that travel from one corner of the globe to work in another and some of the trials and tribulations that they endure, whilst also revealing some hard truths about the academic environment. As a result, we cover the misogyny, racism, and other forms of discrimination migrant academics at times might experience, whilst also tackling just how precarious such their situation might be. We also talk about the process of collecting the narratives of a wide variety of writers who engaged with academia in the most innovative and unique of ways.

Dr Olga Burlyuk is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, at the University of Amsterdam. Dr Ladan Rahbari is a Political Sociologist and an Assistant Professor at the Department of Sociology, at the University of Amsterdam.
